May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - May is "National Osteoporosis Awareness Month." Osteoporosis is to blame for more than 2 million broken bones each year.

Doctors call it a disorder of low bone mass that mainly affects older white women who have gone through menopause.

"It's like a lifestyle change, my mom said. You just have to change your habits and try to do what you can that way you don't have any problems later."

41-year-old Anna Marie Scott says those changes are important because osteoporosis has already heavily impacted her mother and grandmother.

"My grandmother actually just broke her femurs- both of them. And so, now they're going to have to take both her legs off because her bones are just too brittle."

Scott says she's trying to avoid that by getting plenty of calcium in her diet.

"I just take all my vitamins together. And, it's just like a routine."

"A lot of people think of dairy. Dairy products are an excellent source of calcium- yogurt, milk, things like that."

Dr. Daren P. Yeager with Trinity Clinic says there are plenty of other foods packed with calcium.

"Green vegetables and red meat are full of calcium as well."

He says exercise is also key in preventing osteoporosis.

"I try to do yoga. I like yoga." says Scott. "So, I do that. I do a little bit of weightlifting."

That's what Dr. Yeager recommends.

"The best form of exercise for preventing osteoporosis is resistance training. It does not necessarily have to be heavy, but weight bearing exercises are the very best." he says.

High impact exercises like running, walking and jumping are also helpful.

The key is starting a healthy diet and workout regiment early in life. Scott says her young boys help out with that.

"They're very active. So yeah, they tell me 'why don't you run with us?'"

She hopes making smart decisions as a family now will pay off later.

Dr. Yeager says it's never too late to start eating healthy and exercising.
