Health Alert: State's blood alcohol limit could be lowered

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - The National Transportation Safety Board is urging states to cut their legal blood alcohol limit nearly in half from .08 to .05.

The NTSB says alcohol begins to affect perception and visual functions at .05, and in 100 countries around the world, .05 is the standard.

The board also wants all convicted DUI offenders to use breathalyzer ignition locks on their cars.

(CBS) - A new study from the Institute Of Medicine says there's no good evidence that eating super-low levels of salt offers any medical benefits.

In fact, researchers suggest sodium levels below 2,300 milligrams a day could harm some people who are already ill.

But the new report also stresses that, overall, Americans eat too much sodium and they need to cut down on processed foods and eating out.

The American Heart Association says it stands by its recommendations of 1,500 milligrams a day.

(CBS) - Women's immune systems may age more slowly than men's.

Japanese researchers analyzed blood from volunteers and found women hold on to more disease fighting cells as they get older.

Doctors say this may explain why women tend to live longer than men.
