Tatum ISD trustees won't protest existing stores' alcohol permit applications... for now

Posted: Updated:

TATUM/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - Tatum city leaders are working on ways to allow stores to sell beer and wine across the street from schools.

Saturday, Tatum voters approved off-premise beer and wine sales in an 82 to 45 vote. But state law prohibits stores from selling alcoholic beverages within 300 feet of a school, church or hospital--- unless the store gets a variance from the city.

Tatum ISD says -- for now -- it won't stand in the way of letting existing businesses get a permit to sell beer and wine.

"Buying it at the grocery store 1,000 feet from a school, I don't see any difference from buying a glass, or a gallon of milk," Tatum parent Mike Boggess said.

The city council is expected to ratify Saturday's election tomorrow night. After that -- stores can apply to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a license.
