Henderson I.S.D. is ready for new middle school

Posted: Updated:

HENDERSON/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - After having two previous bond proposals shut down by voters in 2010 and 2011, Henderson I.S.D. says it's ready for the drastic and much needed changes coming to Henderson middle school.

Jenny Morquecho has 4 children in the Henderson I.S.D. school district.

"I have 2 that go to middle school right now and then I have 2 coming up."

The bond means for the average $100,000 dollar home, yearly property taxes will go up by about $60.

Morquecho said she doesn't mind, since her children tell her all about Henderson's 60-year-old middle school.

"They've come home and they've told me about some of the things going on with the school."

Issues like plumbing problems and classrooms that are too small or condemned.

Two of about 60 classrooms here at Henderson Middle School have been boarded up, because foundation issues have cause safety hazards.

"Issues are real here at the middle school and it's time for a new middle school for our kids here in the present and for the future."

Principal Dotson says thanks to the more than 1,500 Rusk County voters who voted for the new middle school, soon enough all  existing problems will be part of the past.

H.I.S.D. spokeswoman Stacey Sullivan says the new campus may look something will be a building under one roof with controlled access.

"All visitors would have to go through that entrance to be checked in before going onto the campus."

"I feel safe with where they are at now but less entrances is a whole lot better."

The district says classrooms will meet TEA size requirements and technology will no longer have limitations.

"Smart boards in every room, wireless access so we can utilize iPads and other personal computing devices."

So what happens to the old middle school?

"The old facility will be demolished."

Sullivan calls the new campus a state of the art facility that is long overdue for middle school students in the Henderson school district.

"Whether people voted for or against it, we really need the school."

Right now Henderson I.S.D. says its in the process of choosing who will lead construction and meeting with teachers and the community regarding plans and expectations.

The district says the new middle school will be built and ready for classes in the Fall of 2015.
