GILMER (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) — A former Harmony High School substitute teacher was sentenced to five years in prison Friday after pleading guilty to attempted sexual assault of a 16-year-old boy, Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said.

Judy Lynn Langford, 36, of Big Sandy, was sentenced by Judge Lauren Parish of the 115th District Court for the Nov. 29, 2011, offense of having "sexual contact" with the youth, Byrd said.
Under the plea bargain, Mrs. Langford agreed to forfeit her substitute teacher's license and to register as a sex offender until 10 years after she is paroled, he said.

The defendant, who was fired from Harmony ISD and is married, had originally pleaded guilty Feb. 8 to another felony charge of improper relationship between an educator and student.

However, sentencing was delayed to allow a forensic psychiatric examination of her background, Byrd said. That probe resulted in her withdrawing the plea to that charge and pleading guilty instead to the more serious charge of attempted sexual assault, Byrd said.

Mrs. Langford also admitted to, but was not sentenced for, a charge of online solicitation of another minor — an admission that could be used against her if she is ever charged with another crime, the district attorney said.

Longview attorney Edward Choy, who was formerly first assistant district attorney to Byrd, represented Mrs. Langford at the sentencing. An attempt to reach Choy for comment was unsuccessful Friday.
