Body found in burned car being investigated as a possible homicide

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) - The Smith County Sheriff's office is on the scene of a body found in a burned out car on County Road 3101 near the Smith County line.

A 911 call came into Smith County dispatch around 6 am on Barber Road.

Fire had almost extinguished itself by the time emergency crews arrived on the scene. Smith County Fire Marshal and sheriff office responded to the call. Unidentifiable remains were later found in the car.  Investigators say it will be several days before an identification can be made on the victim.

Officers are trying to piece together the last known whereabouts of victim and whether or not the fire was ignited with the use of flammable liquids.

The car did not show signs of body damage other than what was caused by the fire. The body was found inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

The car out of county in North Texas and the victim is believed to have possible ties to Smith County.

The burned body is being investigated as a potential homicide.

Justice of the Peace Mitch Schamberger pronounced the victim dead.

The body has been sent for autopsy at Southwest Forensics.

The body was badly burned because and cannot tell if male or female.
