Pew Research Center: more moms breadwinner of family

Posted: Updated:

Longview, TX (KYTX) -- It's a milestone for the American family--more moms than ever before are bringing home the bacon.

The Pew Research Center finds mom is now the primary breadwinner in 4 out 10 U.S. households. That's up from just 11 percent in 1960.

One Longview mom talked to us about how she makes it all work. Jessica Guire is a doctor of education, working full-time.

"I work for online universities. I write curriculum, and work online classrooms," Dr. Guire said.

She also has another job that's 24-7, as a wife and mom of three kids.

"We kind of balance chores as best that we can, but majority of it does fall on his shoulders," Guire said.

She's part of a major shift taking place, with more moms becoming the top earners.

"I know that my paycheck pays the bills, and if I'm sick or just don't want to work it's just not an option," Guire said.

Pew finds where moms are the primary breadwinners, 63 percent are single moms and 37 percent are married.

Study authors at Pew say the trend is tied to women's employment rates going up, and rising education levels.
