Large shopping center in Tyler to have 100 stores, attract families

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- Shopaholics, you've been warned. Dozens of stores new to Tyler will soon be popping up at a retail center being developed off far South Broadway.

It's welcome news for moms like Kristin Skaggs. "It's always nice to have things to do, especially for active boys," Skaggs said.

With three boys under age 5, Skaggs keeps busy. "We go to the splash park, go to the zoo, Discovery Science Place, the library," Skaggs said.

The Village at Cumberland Park retail center will add to the list of options for her family. "I am super excited about that, especially for summertime when life kind of slows down," Skaggs said.

President of Broadway South Development Bob Garrett says the center will be large with 12 main buildings. It's a project in conjunction with Dallas-based company The Retail Connection, totaling 700,000 sq. feet with 100 new stores.

Likely names include DSW shoes, TJ Maxxx, and Shenanigans, which would include a bowling alley. Final negotiations with Studio Movie Grill, a movie theater with food and beverages, is also happening.

"We think it's a great addition to Tyler, because it helps keep Tyler a regional retail hub," Garrett said.

And planners have made sure there's access for drivers off of South Broadway.

"The new street that's going to be built will make it very easy to get in and out of the center," Garrett said.

Construction will start later this summer, with stores hopefully open by the summer of 2014.
