TYLER (KYTX) -

A tip from a student at Hogg Middle School led to the arrest of another student Monday. A spokesperson for the Tyler Independent School District said the student was arrested for bringing a loaded .380 pistol to school. The gun was not fired and no one was injured.

The district would not reveal the age of student in question or the student's gender. The arrest was handled by district police. Investigators with the department confiscated the gun.

District spokesperson Dawn Parnell said there was no indication that the student intended to harm or scare anyone. Despite that, she said the student was no longer attending classes on the Hogg Campus. She would not comment on whether the student remained in custody Wednesday afternoon.

Parents told CBS 19 they had received an automated call informing them of the incident.

"I kind of got scared when I heard that because if something happened while my kids were here, anything could happen," Hogg parent Jose Luis Romero Valdez said. "That can cost a life. Somebody's life."

Valdez said, despite not being a gun owner, he already talks with his children about the dangers of guns--on campus or off.

"I tell them a gun is not a toy," he said. "I've told them never, never point a guy at anybody. Even if you say it's not loaded or something, never point a gun at anybody."

David Wheeler, a licensed professional counselor and program director for ETMC Behavioral Health's child and adolescent units, said it's important to remember that children lack certain mental developments when talking with them about not taking anything dangerous to school.

"Number one, they don't have a sense of finality," he said. "So if they do shoot somebody, they don't have a sense of the fact that that person's going to die and they're never going to come back."

Wheeler said children also tend to be more impulsive, and that sugar-coating a discussion about weapons at school would be a mistake.

"You just say 'This is the deal. This is illegal. With what's occurred recently, you can almost guarantee you're going to jail if you do something like this,'" he said. "If you have a concern that your child is being bullied, it is the parents' responsibility to address that with the school and let the kid know, 'if you're felling like this, you need to tell me or tell someone at school.'"

After some parents said they were not notified of the incident, TISD said Tuesday that calls went out to all families registered at Hogg. Families that did not get a call are advised to check with the office at Hogg to make sure their current phone number is on file.

The district released a statement that reads as follows:

"A Tyler ISD middle school student was arrested today for bringing a weapon on campus. The weapon was confiscated by Tyler PD and no students were harmed. While it does not appear that the student brought the firearm on campus to threaten students or staff, safety is our priority and this incident is currently being investigated."
