Health Alert: New research on the dangers of multiple concussions

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Children or teens, who suffer a concussion, take longer to recover if they've had a concussion in the past. A study in the Journal Pediatrics looked at close to 300 patients between the ages of 11 and 22 who suffered concussions.  The study found children who had a second concussion within a year took nearly three times longer to recover.

A new report shows a fifth of designated drivers are under the influence when they get behind the wheel.  Researchers in Florida tested more than 1,000 people as they left bars, including 165 who said they were the designated driver.  They found about 40% of those drivers had been drinking, including 18% who had enough alcohol to impair their driving.

A Canadian study finds MRI scans of children who underwent chemotherapy can detect early changes in their hearts.  Researchers say their findings are important because detecting damage at an early stage is critical for these children so they can start treatment.
