TYLER (KYTX) - The kids may be out of school, but hunger doesn't take a summer break. That's why those with the East Texas Food Bank are making sure children continue getting free meals.

"Sandwich, hamburger, pizza..."

10-year-old Josue Rocha is a hungry child with lots of energy. He's just one of the six mouths to feed in his family.

"They eat maybe three, four times a day- to eat so much." says his mother, Juana.

She says she depends on the food bank's summer food program when her children are out of school.

"It's very helpful."

"Free is good." says Josue.

The Rochas and many other families will be able to take advantage of about 140,000 meals at 60 different locations across East Texas this summer.

"It's good and it's fun for people to come." says Josue.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for us to be able to fill the gap after school's out." says East Texas Food Bank Executive Director Dennis Cullinane.

"When you're not in school, you don't have access to that lunch and that breakfast. We've got to do something in order to make sure that our children's nutrition is taken care of for the summer."

And, Juana is appreciative for the help in her family.

The city park on Queen Street in Tyler will serve about 200 meals every day.

Most locations also offer breakfast.

All children under 18 are invited to eat a free meal. You don't have to bring or show anything.
