Smith Co. inmates help feed hungry East Texans

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) -

Just in time for summer--when more families need help with food--it is harvest time for the East Texas Food Bank.

Smith County jail inmates have a garden south of Tyler that they grow fruits and vegetables in. Since 2010 that garden has produced 120,000 pounds of food for East Texans.

"The fact that we can provide them high quality, nutritious foods is such a blessing to the East Texas Food Bank and out partners," the East Texas Food Bank's Karolyn Davis said.

"The idea was let's take some of the inmates who would like to get out and do something meaningful, earning trustee status, and work out here," the Smith County Sheriff's Department's John Moore said.

The sheriff's department partnered with researchers at Texas A&M University to create the garden in 2009.
