Week of Service

Posted: Updated:

LONGVIEW (KYTX) -  Power washing sidewalks, painting benches, and back breaking yard work, all for free as a service for this church in Longview.this type of work has taken place all week and will continue for the rest of the summer.  Taylor Beretta has traveled from Ohio to join the camp and she says it has been a great experience.

"It is just so fulfilling to give up yourself and serve. And I think we all just long to do that"

The Pines Catholic Church Camp  in Big Sandy, brings in over a thousand campers to the East Texas area each summer. The camp serves as a camp for several East Texas parishes. This week there are 19 campers doing service all around the region.
"Every day we change it up and do some sort of service. We went to the Truman Center and a Nursing Home, and today we are doing yard work for this church"

Father Hank Lanik of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Longview is benefiting from the hard work and he says it helps his church tremendously.
"This is a work that would be very difficult for us to do ourselves. We are just a little downtown parish and it is a great opportunity for us to get a chunk of work done."
"The kids come from all over the nation. Arkansas, Texas, even Ohio and California -- to serve East Texans" - Kevin Boyce

"It's important that these kids understand that it's not about seeing the person you're helping, it's just like helping people back home"

"It's just a selfless love, even though some can't respond to it."
A love they say they were meant to give.
