Replacements reuniting for three shows

(CNN) -- They will dare, again.

The Replacements, the boisterous Minneapolis band that produced such alt-rock classics as "I Will Dare," "Can't Hardly Wait" and "Bastards of Young," is reuniting for three appearances this summer, headlining Riot Fest 2013 in Chicago, Toronto and Denver.

The shows are the first concerts for the band since 1991, when they performed at Chicago's Grant Park. Members Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson reunited last year for a fund-raising album on behalf of guitarist Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke early last year.

Chris Mars, the group's original drummer, will not be participating in the concerts.

The Replacements - known to fans as the 'Mats - were one of the most influential bands of the 1980s, though they never really had the mainstream breakthrough many predicted. Westerberg's raw, often personal songs ran the gamut from frantic rave-ups to quiet mood-setters. The group's concerts, alternately brilliant or disastrous, have inspired an entire website, Color Me Impressed, which is attempting to log every live recording.

The Chicago lineup of Riot Fest will also include the Violent Femmes, Public Enemy, Motorhead, Blondie and Rocket from the Crypt; Toronto's includes Iggy and the Stooges and Dinosaur Jr. and Denver features Rancid and Guided by Voices.
