SMITH COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A Smith County man who led law enforcement officers on a two-county chase early this morning now sits in the Smith County Jail charged with felony evading with a vehicle.

Smith County Sheriff's Spokesman John Moore said Deputy Justin Redding was on a routine patrol about 2:15 this morning when he noticed a vehicle making a turn without using a turn signal in the Pine Trails subdivision off of Texas Highway 155 south.

"The deputy initiated a traffic stop and the driver took off," he said.

Moore said the driver, identified as 34-year-old Robert Anthony Michael May of Flint, fled out of the subdivision onto 155 and drove south, crossing into Henderson County onto a Farm-to-Market Road before turning back onto 155.

As other deputies arrived in the vicinity to help with the stop, Redding also received assistance from Bullard police and together the officers continued the chase.

Moore said May made a turn onto County Road 4216, where he ran into a dead end road and ditched the vehicle.

"He fled into the woods, but deputies were able to apprehend him a short time later," he said.

May remained jailed at the noon hour on a $15,000 bond. Records indicate he has been arrested several times on charges including possession of narcotics and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
