Hundreds head out for early Tyler Juneteenth celebration

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The emancipation of slaves in Texas is June 19th, or more commonly known as Juneteenth. It was the day slaves in Galveston first learned they were slaved. The word came two years after slaves in other places had been freed.

Hundreds came out Saturday to celebrate and honor that special moment in history. Saturday's celebration was a bit more special as it marked the 150 year of Texas slave emancipation.

Juneteenth celebration organizers said these celebrations are a way to keep the young involved and educate everyone on African American history and secondarily give people a chance to have fun.

"It just gives us a lot of joy to see and pull off and see all the people out here enjoying themselves," said the President of the Juneteenth Association in Tyler. He's been with the organization since the 80's

"I mean we come every year, it's just a tradition for us," said Bianca Brahnam.

Brahnam was this year's recipient of the Tyler Juneteenth Scholarship. She said she plans to attend Tyler Junior College for a year before transferring to Stephen F. Austin to pursue a degree in Communications.
