Van Zandt County man drowns while attempting to help child

VAN ZANDT COUNTY (TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A 26-year-old Van Zandt County man drowned while trying to save a 5-year-old girl in a Canton reservoir.

Travis Williamson, of Edgewood, was swimming with friends June 9 at Mill Creek Reservoir when the girl, who was a part of his group, started struggling in the water.

Steve Stapleton, a game warden with Texas Parks and Wildlife, said Williamson tried to save the girl and drowned himself.

A bystander swam the girl to shore. By the time nearby boaters found Williamson, he had been underwater for several minutes, Stapleton said.

He was airlifted to Mother Frances Hospital where he had been in intensive care until he died on Saturday, Stapleton said. The girl was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was fine.

Stapleton said neither drugs nor alcohol were a factor in the incident based on the investigation.
