The Tyler Public Library is getting kids excited about "Digging Into Reading"

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - The Tyler Public Library is encouraging kids, teens, and even adults to keep their brains up and reading through the Summer.

Using time logs available at the Library and online, children, teens and adults track the hours they spend reading in June and July.Children who are not reading independently may participate by having someone read to them. Once the reader has logged 12 hours and turned in a completed time log to the Library Information Desk they can pick up a free book from the "Dig Into Reading" Cart or the Book Nook.

"Teachers can tell when a child has been reading over the summer, since it is a great way to keep the brain engaged while not in school," said Linda Gray, youth services librarian. "If they happen to be entertained at the same time, then it is a win-win situation."

All kids and teens that do complete their logs will be entered into a raffle drawing. The raffle includes generous prizes from local donors. The final day to turn in reading logs is Wednesday, July 24; the raffle drawing winners will be announced on Friday, July 26.

Here are some other events that are keeping readers busy at the library this Summer.

Fables and Films which

Throughout June and July, young children are invited to Fables and Films which is 30 minutes of picture books, stories and age-appropriate short films. Hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning at 10:30 a.m..

Movie Matinees

Movie Matinees for elementary children are shown every Monday and Tuesday at 2 p.m.. and showcase feature films.

Teens & Tweens

Teens & Tweens, a new series of hands-on experiences for kids who have completed fifth grade and above, is set for Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m..  Most events are collaborative efforts between the Library and a community organization or individual. This year, we will have visits from the Caldwell Zoo, plant experts from the Farmer's Market, along with other creative opportunities. Registration is required for this program by visiting www.TylerLibrary.com.

Fab Fridays

Fab Fridays bring great entertainment for all ages to the Library. Special guests include animal educators from Zooniversity, Southwest Dairy and Caldwell Zoo, along with bilingual story teller, Consuelo Samarripa.

All summer programs take place in Taylor Auditorium at the Tyler Public Library, 201 S. College in downtown Tyler, unless noted otherwise

Any groups, summer camps, or child care facilities are welcome to attend events but must register and contact the Library. Individuals and families do not need to register unless attending the Teens & Tweens program which has a 40-child maximum.
