Donations save Overton's 4th of July fireworks show

Posted: Updated:

Overton (KYTX) -- UPDATE: The fireworks show previously canceled in Overton has been saved by community donations.

"We have people come from Henderson and Tyler and Kilgore to watch firework show," Bobbie Guinn, co-owner of Arpco Valves and Controls in Overton, said.

Her coworker chimes in. "It's patriotic, it's something we really enjoy doing. There's a lot of work that goes into it and pride behind it," Noey Brown, field technician at Arpco, said.

After hearing the City of Overton lacked money in the budget to provide a 4th of July fireworks show this year, Arpco teamed up with another business in town to pick up the slack.

"It's very important to us to contribute to the community as much as we can," Guinn said.

The fireworks celebration costs $2500 every year. But city leaders say unplanned expenses like refurbishing a water storage tank for $17000 and a major water break forced the tough decision.

"What do people want: fireworks or have a pothole fixed in front of their house?" Joe Cantu, City Manager of Overton, said.

This donation makes it possible for the community to have both.
