Sidewalk Construction Causes Dispute

Posted: Updated:

OVERTON (KYTX) - Sidewalk renovation in Overton , it's gone on for about a week in front of Sheryl Thornton's hair salon, The Barber Pole. Thornton says it has already made her lose some business. She had to close 2 days for construction. Now people don't want to put up with the construction, which could last through the end of July.
"I have seen people park across the street and not want to come in, because it is too far. If they can't park right here in front of the door and come in, they won't come."
And once it is complete, there will be a ramp in front of her business.  She says  that will force her customers to walk 20 feet down the road to the ramp's entrance, and 20 feet back and she has a lot of elderly customers who can't walk long distances.
"We had to follow the law, and this is the way the engineer drew it up."
Overton City Manager Joe Cantu says the city received a $150,000 grant to build the handicap accessible ramp in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. They're repairing the city's old sidewalks too.
"The city manager says that with the sidewalks cracked and crumbling like this, there was no option but to do repairs' - Kevin Boyce
And the city says because of the sidewalk design, there's no way to avoid taking the ramp up to the door of The Barber Pole. Thornton plans to take the issue to City Council Thursday.
"It scares me to think, it scares me, that my 31-year career could easily go away"

She hopes her customers will keep coming regardless of what happens.
