LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - Today, the Good Shepherd Health System Board of Directors announced the appointment of a new president and chief executive officer. Mr. Steve Altmiller has accepted the position and will begin filling this role on July 22.

"We are looking forward to the leadership that Mr. Altmiller will bring to Good Shepherd," said Buck Birdsong, chairman of the board. "The Board unanimously supported the selection among a group of very qualified and experienced candidates."

Steve Altmiller is a seasoned and broadly experienced health system CEO with experience in a large integrated system, a stand-alone hospital, and an investor-owned system. He is a certified public accountant and early in his career served as an auditor at Arthur Anderson giving him a strong financial foundation to support his leadership capabilities. Altmiller has most recently served as the President of North Mississippi Medical Center located in Tupelo, Mississippi, which received the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award in 2012. Over his 35 year career, Mr. Altmiller has served as President & CEO of hospitals ranging in size from 240-beds to 650-beds located in Texas, New Mexico and Mississippi.

"We could not be more pleased with this selection and are looking forward to the benefit of Mr. Altmiller's extensive experience at leading successful institutions of exceptional quality as well as his collaborative approach to the delivery of healthcare.  These qualities will be a great asset to the Health System, particularly as we align with our physician community to achieve new heights of quality and efficiency," said Ken Cunningham, executive vice president and interim CEO.

"Good Shepherd Health System is fortunate to be welcoming an executive of Mr. Altmiller's character and experience to serve at the helm," continued Birdsong. "We are confident he will lead the organization with vision and foresight."

He received his bachelor's degree in business administration from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and has served on the boards of many community organizations including Boys & Girls Club of North Mississippi, Community Development Foundation, and Kiwanis Club. He has also served as a member of the adjunct faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Mr. Altmiller is married with two grown children and two grandchildren.
