Injured crossfit athlete well enough to make it to special benefit

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - A man seriously injured in a wreck in central Texas two weeks ago came back home to Tyler today. He was surrounded by fellow crossfit athletes as they took on an intense workout in his benefit.

It's been 15 days since a head on collision destroyed Nichols' car.

"We hit each other going 75 mph...and I was lifeflighted to the hospital in Temple Texas," he said. "I woke up and I had had an accident, outside of that nothing else."

In the accident, he escaped with serious injuries to the lower half of his body, but he survived.

His wife Sarah Nichols remembers finding out what happened.

"it was terrifying, it was scary. I just clung to the fact that it wasn't the worst news that I could have gotten in this situation," his wife said.

Since the accident, she hasn't left his side. Others standing by his side is his crossfit family. In light of the stress the injuries have placed on the Nichols family, they're crossfit family came together for a special workout.

"Crossfit isn't about self, it's about going out there and being part of a positive community," said Nichols.

It was a special benefit to help the Nichol's family combat the cost of medical and living expenses. Organizers of the event (owners of Crossfit Tyler) believe this was the perfect choice.

Nichols was greeted with smiles and requests for pictures. No one expected him to make it to the benefit so soon after his accident. However they weren't too surprised, because they say that's what crossfit is all about: Triumphing even in adversity.

There is still a lot more healing before Nichols can join his family back in the crossfit box, but he's already planning his return.
