Ham Radio Operators Compete

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Dennis Kippa has been involved with amateur radio since he was 14 years old - and he says it is a better hobby, than watching TV.
"It's kind of fascinating to listen to other people all across the world. It kind of takes me there, without ever leaving the room"
The annual Field Day Competition is held across the United States, where teams compete to see who can contact the most stations in a 24 hour period. Terry Johnson has been involved with the hobby for 3 decades, he says he looks forward to the competition every year.
"I like it because I like talking to people. It is basically a people to people hobby."
The Longview East Texas Amateur Radio Club found over 400 stations across the US.
"The 60 operators from East Texas say that they are doing more than sending these messages up in the air, they are getting better prepared for emergencies."
"People need to realize that someday your cell phone may not work and that's when HAM Radio operators will be there."
Dennis says that ham operators are the go to guys when computers, and phone lines go down. But at the end of the day, Terry Johnson says it's still a great  hobby.

"We get together, and we have lots of fun"
