The Texas Asthma Camp kicked off Sunday

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - The Texas Asthma Camp kicked off Sunday June 23. During this annual camp 70 kids ages 7 to 14 are having fun while learning more about their asthma.

Camp director Rhonda Scoby says,"Research shows that children who attend asthma camp miss fewer school days and have fewer emergency room visits and hospitalizations during the following year than children who don't go to asthma camp."

The kids will learn about what could trigger there asthma, how their medications work, and how to better manage their asthma.

Since 1985, about 3,000 children have experienced Asthma Camp where they learn skills necessary to managing their disease. This specific camp is the oldest one of its kind in Texas devoted to helping kids with asthma.

Besides gaining knowledge about asthma, campers enjoy fun activities like any other Summer camp.

The campers are watched closely and the Health Science Center provides medical support 24 hours and is staffed by on-site physicians and nurses.Respiratory therapists students from Tyler Junior College and Angelina College in Lufkin serve as camp counselors.

"We rely on physicians and school nurses to help us identify the sickest kids, those who will benefit the most from attending asthma camp. We want kids whose experience at Texas Asthma Camp will make a real and positive difference in their lives," says Scoby.
