Reading camp aims to spark love for books over the summer

Posted: Updated:

Tyler, TX (KYTX) -- School may be out, but plenty of kids have their noses in a book this week. They're taking part in the Junior League of Tyler's Summer Reading Camp, which aims to keep books on the brain so students don't lose their learning skills over the summer.

"I like the way we get to yell in the halls and do chants," Josiah Jordan, a 7-year-old camper, said.

It's that excitement for camp that Junior League organizers hope will spark an excitement for books.

"We're trying to target the kids who may not have a love of reading yet," Melissa Harrell, 2013 reading camp co-chair, said.

This week 175 campers from Tyler ISD schools get exposure to the fun side of picking up a book. Every day a different book is featured, each with a different theme.

"They go home with 20 to 25 new books every year to build their own personal library, which is my favorite part of the camp," Harrell said.

Tyler ISD teachers are in big support of the program, in its 19th year.

"It is one of our projects we designed ourselves and that we created. We saw a need," Shannon Glenney, Junior League of Tyler President, said.

It's a story with a happy ending--these young students leaving with books for the summer and memories for a lifetime.
