Asthma camp teaches health & life lessons

SMITH COUNTY (KYTX) -

All week long, Camp Tyler is hosting a group of 70 East Texas children with one thing in common.

U.T. Health Northeast and the Texas Chest Foundation have teamed up to teach children how to deal with asthma. But the bigger lesson is, whether it's canoeing, swimming or something else, nothing is off limits.

"Just because I have asthma doesn't mean I can't do what everyone else does, you know?" camper Kaegan Soriano said. "It's just something you have to learn to cope with. You can't just have a magic fairy come and poof it away."

"The other gift you can give a child with asthma is simply to relieve their parents' fear that they can't do what normal kids can do," camp medical director Dr. Jim Stocks said.

Stocks said he's found that children there are much less likely to have acute asthma attacks for at least a year after attending camp.

This is the 29th year for Asthma Camp in East Texas.
