TISD employees could be getting a pay raise

TYLER (KYTX) - The Texas legislature session recently ended with the passing of Senate Bill 1. It will  provide more funding for Texas schools. For TISD, some of the money from that funding could go toward giving teachers and staff a pay raise. One they haven't seen in several years.

"I went to public schools all my life, and I don't think some of the teachers get paid enough," said Jason Motschman. He's a parent now and said it's about time TISD teachers got a raise.

"You have some teachers that are really hands on and really try to reach for these students attention."

With the recent passing of the Senate Bill 1, staff and math teacher Kenya Symonette could get a pay raise.

"Pencils and erasers and yes I do have to dig into my own pocket to get that."

The state will give an extra $7.5 million next school year. The chief financial officer is asking board members to approve most of that to fund the raises.

Even if the salary increase isn't approved, Symonette said she's excited the government has finally decided to start putting more money back into the educational system.

"For the past three years, the state has been taking money out of public schools... if you pour money into a public school you'll keep kids out of prison."

Motschman agrees, he said energetic, well paid teachers will create better students, and those kids will be more likely to become productive members of society.

The board will vote on the proposal in July.
