Sidewalk Sales Approved in Kilgore

Posted: Updated:

KILGORE (KYTX) - "I spoke with one small business that says every penny made in today's economy, is crucial for any small business to survive"
Tonja Denmon manages Heart to Heart, a small boutique in downtown kilgore. She's had to fight to make a solid profit the past couple of years.
"Sales have been slow, every dime counts"
She says her store looks for anyway it can to mix it up a bit, and draw more customers. Until Tuesday night, placing merchandise outside on the sidewalk wasn't one of them.
"Women love to shop, and when we see a rack outside, stuff is on sale."
But Kilgore City Council approved a new city ordinance that *will allow downtown businesses to place products on city sidewalks in front of a business. The previous ordinance required a permit which businesses had to pay for. Main Street Manager Clara Chaffin says the city was worried about how the downtown area would look.
"We wanted to make it a pedestrian friendly downtown, and not junk it up with a lot of merchandise."
She says the move was important in making sure businesses remain downtown.
"They wanted to display there merchandise to make money. And without those businesses there would be no downtown"
For Tonja and Heart to Heart, she says she looks forward to seeing the effects on her store.
"Something needed to be done to draw more business here"
"The City Ordinance only allows merchandise on sidewalks on Thursday 3 PM to close, and on Saturdays until 6 PM.
