Health Alert: Being overweight may lead to heart failure

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - New research finds that being overweight contributes to the development of heart failure as well as higher blood pressure, insulin levels and cholesterol.

Scientists have long known there's a link between obesity and heart disease, but until now, it was unclear if being overweight causes heart problems.

Swedish scientists studied 200-thousand patients. Looking at metabolism, and whether their obesity was caused genetically.

(CBS) - A new study has mixed news for heart failure patients.

The good news, according to researchers with the Mayo Clinic, is that heart failure patients are surviving more often with the condition.

The bad news, they're increasingly likely to be diagnosed with cancer.

Scientists say the causes could be side effects of their treatments or possibly stress from their illness.

(CBS) - Women who take hormones after menopause should also take calcium and vitamin D supplements to strengthen their bones.

That's the recommendation from the Women's Health Initiative after studying 30,000 postmenopausal women.

They found the women who took hormones and supplements were less likely to suffer hip fractures.
