TYLER (KYTX) -

A Tyler business was recognized Wednesday for having a building that's beautiful and environmentally friendly. Genesis Group, also called GenCore, opened a new facility in January on Eagles Nest Boulevard and caught the attention of Keep Tyler Beautiful.

GenCore collects rain water for irrigation and provide chargers for employees with electric cars. The building also provides an opportunity for growth that would never have been possible in the company's old office space.

The growth is important, because programmers at Genesis work on projects with the potential to save lives. The company's software helps run and diagnose problems on large-scale two-way communication networks often used by first responders.

"Boston being a great example," Genesis President Jim Nipp said. "Cops wouldn't have been able to push their emergency alarms and communicate with each other."

After hurricane Sandy, first responders in the northeast used Genesis software to beef up radio capabilities. All over the world, that software is answering one basic question.

"Could the radio system handle [the worst possible situation]?" Nipp said. "If a plane few into a building, would everyone still be able to communicate?"

After years in a cramped building the company has a new "green" home.

"We decided to be smart and good stewards of the resources," Genesis CEO Phil Burks said.

It's state of the art for a company that can't afford to fall behind.

"When lives are on the line you need something to make sure that it's working," Nipp said.
