City wants your input on local business and economy

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The City of Tyler wants to hear what you have to say about the local business environment and economy.

This is all part of the Tyler 1st comprehensive planning process. It serves as a framework for future improvements in the city.

"There's an ebb and a flow. It rises and it declines." says Pam Gabriel.

She owns Sweet Gourmet, a specialty store in Tyler that's stood the test of time for more than seven years.

"I think anytime you go into business and you're not scared a little, I think you need to reevaluate your situation." she says.

President of Tyler Economic Development Council Tom Mullins says retail has been gaining momentum. It's not the strongest industry in Tyler though.

"The drivers of the economy are energy, distribution, retirees... We're a regional medical center. We're a higher education center. We have over 20,000 full-time students now in Tyler."

Mullins says Tyler needs to make more room for all of that expansion.

"We've got a good infrastructure system, although we need to invest in it and maintain it because of all the growth and population."

And, he says there are areas needing improvement.

"One thing that has bothered me is the loss of manufacturing jobs."

He says Tyler took a hit losing Goodyear and Carrier.

"But on the plus side, we're gaining jobs in the technology sector."

Mullins credits areas like telecommunications, and Internet and software companies.

"Texas has become the number one state in the nation for business climate and business growth and development." he says.

"It's just a good place to be." says Gabriel. "I think you can find it all right here in Tyler."

You can voice your feedback on Tyler's business environment and economy at Thursday's open house. It's at Park Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on 5th street, behind Posado's, from 5 - 7 p.m.
