Web Exclusive: The Rain Room lets people control the weather

Posted: Updated:

(CNN) - Most people go inside to avoid the rain, but in New York City, thousands of people are going inside -- to experience it.  It's a new art exhibit called "The Rain Room."  It just may be the world's wettest learning experience.

A dark room, a wall of water, and a chance to control the weather.

"It's an overwhelming sensory experience," says Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator at Large, Museum of Modern Art.  "The Rain Room" is at the MoMA.  "I am surprised because I think nothing can really rock New York City but seemingly this does. It's like a beautiful cube of torrential tropical rain and it feels just soothing, and then you walk in and it magically stops when you walk in."

Magic has very little to do with how this works. Cameras at the top of the installation are tracking people's movements and creating a virtual umbrella. "And it's like a huge gigantic GPS system.  You walk in and wherever the cameras detect you're on satellite and the rain stops," says Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator at Large, Museum of Modern Art.

There is a technique to staying completely dry.  You must move very slowly.  There is a serious artistic point to these hydro games.  "So the piece is really about ecology. It makes you aware, it means you have to slow down you can't just rush and exploit nature," says Klaus Biesenbach, Chief Curator at Large, Museum of Modern Art.

The sheer amount of amazement and excitement on people's faces is quite extraordinary.  They are discovering for a brief moment that they can control the rain.
