Deputies: Dog kills woman in her home in Liberty County

Posted: Updated:

LIBERTY COUNTY (KHOU) – Authorities are searching for a dog who killed a woman Monday morning in a subdivision just outside Dayton city limits.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, a husband received a call from his wife while he was at work in Pearland. The woman told him that their dog had bit her, and then the line suddenly went dead.

The husband called the sheriff's office just after 10 a.m. and asked that they go check on his wife. As deputies arrived at the scene in the Woodland Hills subdivision, they were confronted by an aggressive dog with the home's gated front yard.

The deputies said that the dog was large with long black hair with blood on its head and back.

With the husband still on the phone with the sheriff's office, he tells them to shoot the dog.

As the deputy approached the front porch, he shot the dog once and then it ran off. However, the dog returned and the deputy fired two more shots before the animal fled under a fence and into the nearby woods.

The deputies enter the home to find the woman dead from excessive bleeding from dog bites.

Investigators said that it appears the larger dog attacked one of the family's smaller dogs. When the victim rescued the smaller dog, the larger dog turned on her.

Deputies are patrolling the subdivision looking for the dog. Although the breed is not known for sure, it is thought to be a Labrador.

The sheriff's office is asking that if anyone sees this dog to please call the dispatcher at (936) 336-4500 and to not approach the animal.

In addition, deputies said that it would not be wise to allow small children or family pet animals to remain in the yard if you live in Woodland Hills until the dog is captured.
