East Texas "Pro-Life" supporters heading to Austin

Posted: Updated:

CORRECTION: Supporters can meet at Rep. Matt Schaefer's office at the capital at 6:30 p.m. Monday to pick up signs and leave their belongings before heading to the rally at 7pm on the south capital steps.

We previously said, it would be at 8 a.m. Monday.

TYLER (KYTX) - State Representative Matt Schaefer is asking East Texans to join him at the capitol next week, in support of the state's controversial abortion bill.

"It's important to me, because I think that in order to respect life as adults and as children, we have to respect the life at conception," said Suzanne Laine.

Tylerite Suzanne Laine plans to head to the state capitol to tell state legislators the abortion bill needs to be passed.

"If we respect life from the moment that baby is conceived, or at any time during that pre-birth, until that moment that person dies, I really think it will change the way we view one another," said Laine.

She's just one of many pro-life activists who say they speak for the unborn and the standard care of women.

"To me, life is the first right that we all have, the first civil right that we all have," added Laine.

Under the measure, abortions would be banned after 20 weeks and providers would face tougher requirements that could force many to shut down.

Thousands of pro-choice activists have rallied at the capitol in the past few weeks.

Laura Corman is fighting for women in rural areas.

"I think it's my responsibility for someone who will have easy access regardless of my location," said Laura Corman.

Republican lawmakers, like Representative Matt Schaefer, are confident they will finally pass the bill.

"This bill is simply going to say if you're 5 months old and you can feel pain, we're going to give you some protection in the state of Texas," said Rep. Matt Schaefer, District 6.

He's asking other like-minded East Texans to make their voices heard.

"When people drive from Tyler or  Bullard and stand on the capitol steps, that sends a message," said Rep. Schaefer.

"I think that ultimately it's important for Texans to stand up for what Texans believe in," said Laine.

But, this is an issue where everyone's beliefs aren't the same.
