Health Alert: CT scans risky for children

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - Most parents think a CT scan emits as much radiation as a regular X-ray and under-estimate the risks.

That's from researchers who interviewed over 700 parents whose child was in an emergency room with a head injury.

Radiation exposure from a head CT scan is 60 to 80 times greater than that of an X-ray.

The study found that after doctors informed parents of the risks, willingness to proceed with a CT scan dropped from 90 to 69 percent.

(CBS) - New research shows African Americans with blood cancer don't live as long as whites despite receiving the same care.

Among patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, doctors say African Americans have shorter survival times because they are more susceptible to the more aggressive forms of the cancer.

Scientists are trying to figure out why biological factors such as race affect cancer survival.

(CBS) - Scientists may have determined why some mothers have difficulty making enough milk to breastfeed.

New research suggests mammary glands are sensitive to insulin - the hormone that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood.

That means mothers who are diabetic, overweight or have a large birth weight baby often experience problems regulating the body's insulin and that could delay breast milk production.

Doctors are conducting clinical trials, but they say diet and exercise are more effective than any drug.
