Summer heat cooling locations are open to the public

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - The thermometer is continuing to rise across east Texas. People without air conditioning are looking for a cool place to stay. So even as the temperatures are rising, there are some cool places you can go.

CaroLynn Stone has been in east Texas for one week.

"I've been walking in it looking for jobs ."

And so far she said, "This heat is something else."

She's spending some of  her day under a tree sitting on  a bench.

Shade under a tree isn't enough for everyone, so there are a few places already opening their doors giving out a cup of water or a cool down.

"We're always prepared but we never know what the weather's gonna do," said Chantel Millin with the Salvation Army.

She said there is a great need in our community to keep cool. The salvation army has sponsored several fan drives .

When temperatures reach 100 degrees or higher, the Salvation army opens up their cooling locations.

In the next couple of weeks  more cooking locations will start to open, but in the meantime, specialist say some of the key groups to keep an eye on are infants and seniors because they're the ones most likely to suffer in the heat.

July 16, a committee led by the Tyler Fire Department will collaborate with city and county leaders to nail down a list of summer time cooling locations.

The YMCA, Tyler Library, Glass recreation center and the Tyler Senior Center are some of the places you can go now to keep cool.
