UPDATE: Smith Co. Sheriff Releases Deputy's Arrest Video, D.A. says no cases in jeopardy

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: The Smith County Sheriff's Department released new video of former deputy Kimbrick Jones' arrest Thursday. Also on Thursday, District Attorney Matt Bingham said a crew of three has been reviewing cases for potential ties to Jones. Bingham said none had turned up so far.

A Smith County Sheriff's deputy was arrested on federal drug charges and fired from the department Wednesday. 38-year-old Kimbrick Jones was the focus of a two-month joint investigation by the sheriff's department, the Texas Rangers and the FBI.

Investigators were acting on a federal arrest warrant when they arrested Jones at 5 a.m. Wednesday inside the sally port at the Smith County jail. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and using or carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.

In a press conference Sheriff Larry Smith said the gun charge was a by-product of the accusation that Jones made the sales while on duty and wearing his uniform--which includes a gun.

"What I've promised to do for the citizens of Smith County is if we see things like this, we take care of them."

FBI Supervisory Agent Brent Chambers said Sheriff Smith wanted to make sure the investigation was un-biased.

"Our penalties are usually higher than the states' [penalties]," Chambers said.

Jones was been a patrol deputy for five years. Before that he worked in the jail. Jone's mother said he denies any involvement in drugs and that she believes him.

"This is a slap in the face to every man and woman that wears a uniform here for the Smith County Sheriff's Office and also to the public which we're supposed to serve," Smith said.

Jones was fired on the spot. Smith said he hopes people continue to come forward when something is wrong.

"Had they not done that, we'd still have someone out there selling crack cocaine and methamphetamine out of a Smith County patrol car," Smith said.

Jones was being held in the Gregg County jail Wednesday.

Smith said he did not expect any cases stemming from arrests made by Jones to be affected by the scandal.
