UPDATE: (KYTX) - Shelby Regional Medical Center closed its emergency room at noon Thursday as planned.

Shortly before noon Thursday, the hospital's owner, Dr. Tariq Mahmood, called the hospital's director of nursing, Jana Danley, and asked Danley if she could find someone to work security at the hospital grounds at minimum wage. Danley said the hospital contains several narcotics in its pharmacy, which can't be shut down Thursday until state regulators OK the closure.

Mahmood is a Cedar Hill heart specialist who owns several Texas hospitals.

CENTER (KYTX) - Shelby Regional Medical Center will be closing their emergency room tomorrow at noon. Currently there are only two registered nurses working in the ER and a small crew working in the rest of the facility.

The Director of Nurses, Jana Danley states that SRMC is not taking over night patients and ambulances are being told not to come to the medical center.

At 6:45 p.m. last night, Danley was contacted by Dr. Mahmood and advised that the facility be closed immediately and patients be advised to seek care elsewhere. Danely explains that she could not do that because the community had to be properly notified of the medical center closing.

The hospital  sees anywhere from 700 to 900 emergency patients every month, has an ER, and 44 bed for over night patients.

Dr. Cline stated that the facility will remain open to help patients with minor emergency needs.

"We are prepared to give some guidance to patients who may call or walk in about whether they are appropriate to be seen in a non-emergency room setting," says Cline. "I along with other health care professionals regret to see the hospital close. But we continue to be committed to provide urgent care/minor trauma care including x-rays and labs as well as inpatient care that may be needed in Nacogdoches Medical Center Hospital."
