City plans to build wall to fix Lake Tyler Dam

Posted: Updated:

LAKE TYLER (KYTX) - While people take a dip in Lake Tyler and cruise on their boats, the Lake Tyler Dam, just a few feet away, continues to slowly leak.

"Well, I'm sure it's going to affect the fishing out here," said Bill Stephenson.

It was back in April when Bill Stephenson took me behind his Lake Tyler home and showed me where the lake levels use to be.

"It has been terribly low for the almost last year and half now," said Stephenson.

He wasn't surprised to hear that this dam built in the late 1940's had a leak.  The foundation material is still the same from the original construction.

"It probably had seepage since the very first day the dam was in service," said Greg Morgan, Tyler Water Utilities.

But, it wasn't documented until 1978.

35 years later, Greg Morgan with Tyler Water Utilities said plans are being made to build a deep soil mixing cutoff wall on the back side of the dam.

The wall will be 60 feet deep and about 3,000 feet wide and should stop the leak.

"We will not impact the lake elevation whatsoever during this construction," said Morgan.

The official plan for the wall should be completed by the end of July. The city will advertise for bidders in August and September with construction starting at the end of September.

Construction is estimated to take six months.
