Health Alert: Certain areas of body fat increase health risks

Posted: Updated:

(CBS) - A new study shows where you carry fat on your body can increase your risk of heart disease and cancer.

Researchers in Massachusetts found excessive belly fat translates into more risk for the diseases compared to someone who carries the same amount of fat in other areas of the body.

They used cat scans to identify areas of fat accumulation.

Then followed more than 3,000 patients for up to seven years.

(CBS) - Patients with Alzheimer's Disease have a lower risk of developing cancer.

Researchers in Italy found the opposite is also true that those with cancer have less chance of developing Alzheimer's Disease.

Scientists are not sure why but they say understanding the relationship between the two diseases could help them develop new treatments.

(CBS) - People in their 90s live longer and are now mentally sharper than they were a decade ago.

That's the finding of researchers in Denmark who studied patients born in 1905 and in 1915.

They found people born in 1915 were nearly a third more likely to reach the age of 95, and that they performed better on cognitive tests as well as activities of daily living.
