UT Tyler packed with summer school students

TYLER (KYTX) - School's out for summer, but not if you're one of the thousands of students at UT Tyler taking courses right now.

School leaders don't have any hard numbers just yet, but they say it does seem to be a lot busier this year.

"A lot more people, just a lot more people walking around. Class is actually completely full as if it were a regular semester." says 24-year-old Vanessa Davila.

She is a senior kinesiology major and says she's never taken summer classes with so many students before.

"I mean, I was surprised."

"I haven't seen the enrollment numbers. But, just walking around, it is busier." says Dr. Scott Marzilli, assistant vice president for teaching innovation and student success.

"For the past two years, summer enrollment has gone up exponentially, but most of that enrollment has been in online classes."

Davila says she'd never guess that by the look of her classes.

"Labs- we had to bring in extra chairs from other classrooms because it was packed. We had five extra chairs we had to bring in because it was more than normal."

Whether online or face-to-face, Dr. Marzilli says UT Tyler is offering more classes this summer.

"When you offer classes, students will come because a student doesn't want to take six years to graduate."

That's why Davila is taking summer courses.

"I won't have to be here an extra semester to graduate."

And, she's not complaining about the crowd on campus.

"Ii think it's great for the university. I mean, more people, just more diversity in general. It's good." she says.

Dr. Marzilli says UT Tyler has also opened up more student services, like a new restaurant, for example, in the University Center. That's also drawing a crowd.

Last summer, more than 2,700 students took summer courses. That's up from about 600 students two years ago.
