Upshur Co. commissioners: No burn ban, no four-day work week

Posted: Updated:

GILMER/UPSHUR COUNTY (KYTX) - In a 9 a.m. meeting today, Upshur County commissioners considered a possible burn ban and a four-day work week for county employees. In both issues, they said no.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Cole Hefner said the court decided not to call a burn ban, because the county's drought index measurements - though high - were not high enough to warrant a burn ban. He expects those measurements to drop after showers that have fallen on the county since Sunday.

In other business, supervisors of some county departments asked commissioners about switching to a four-day work week for all county employees. Hefner said commissioners, by law, can't change schedules for offices of other elected officials, such as the county clerk, district clerk or tax assessor-collector. He said commissioners can consider a four-day work week for budgetary reasons, as in eliminating eight hours from the work week. He said the county is not in such a dire budget situation that it needs to consider that act at this time.

Commissioners will meet again at 1:30 this afternoon at the Upshur County Courthouse, to hear from representatives of New Braunfels-based Alternative Benefit Solutions and Group and Pension Administrators, about health insurance for the county's employees.

We will have more about today's meetings and residents' reaction on KYTX CBS 19 News at Six.
