Web Exclusive: Expecting a big pay raise? What new study says...

Posted: Updated:
(CBS/CNN) - Pay raises next year will only be slightly more generous than they have been over the past few years.  That's the finding of a new survey by consulting firm, Mercer.  Employers anticipate increasing worker salaries by an average of 2.9% in 2014.  That's just marginally better than the 2.8% boost they gave this year, according to Mercer. But it is a big improvement from 2009, when raises averaged two-point-one percent.  Mercer says part of the downward pressure on salaries comes from relatively high unemployment -- meaning employers still have the upper hand in recruiting new workers.

The company that owned the World Trade Center on September 11th is suing the airlines whose hijacked planes were used in the attack.  World Trade center properties received nearly $5 billion dollars in insurance, but the company is suing United and American Airlines for another $3.5 billion.  A lawyer for the airlines says the amount is much more than the buildings were worth.

Microsoft is slashing the price of its new tablet in the hopes of selling more of them.  The tablet called surface is being dropped from $499 to $349 dollars.  Microsoft just reorganized its corporate structure and is trying to focus more on devices.

Soccer teams lead the Forbes list of most valuable sports organizations.  Real Madrid takes the number one spot and is worth more than $3 billion dollars. Manchester United slipped to number 2 after owning the top spot last year.  The Barcelona soccer club is third.  The New York Yankees are the first non-soccer team at fourth and the Dallas Cowboys follow with a worth of $2.1 billion according to Forbes.
