People Come Together to Achieve Peace

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Nearly 30 people, gathered in Downtown Longview to reunite all colors, religions, and backgrounds in light of the Florida jury's decision Saturday to acquit George Zimmerman in  Trayvon Martin's death.  Dionne Canada who came out to be part of the rally says it's not about the verdict, but peace among all with different opinions.

"It is important because of the things that are going on right now, I think back to 63 and Martin Luther King and how much he fought for peace."

Shara Lilly of Longview organized the rally which she's calling Unify Longview. She reached out to people through a Unify Longview Facebook Page she created for this event. Lilly says that the need to unify the community was here long before Saturday's verdict.
'I simply don't see any cultural awareness here"

And she says that is what the rally is all about.
"The group gathered in front of the Gregg County Courthouse to join hands regardless of race, religion, or social background"
But now that these people have joined together, what started as a rally, could become an organized group.
"Our objective is to bring people in of all backgrounds, and give us a place to exchange ideas, and simply talk'
Dionne appreciates that mission, and thinks if it succeeds, Longview's future will be bright.
"If people can just be honest with themselves, there is a lot that can be done right here in Longview.'
