CENTER/SHELBY COUNTY (KYTX) - An attempted suicide investigation in Center has become a criminal probe, after the woman injured in Thursday's wreck on U.S. 96 North has died.

Center police said this afternoon that the woman suffered major head trauma when it was reported that she jumped from a moving SUV and hit the pavement Thursday evening. She was taken by EMS to ETMC-Carthage, but later airflighted to ETMC-Tyler, where she died Sunday.

An autopsy was ordered into the woman's death, after detectives found inconsistencies in the story from the driver, 41-year-old Alejandro Zamora. Shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, Zamora was arrested by Center police for driving while intoxicated, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a controlled substance.

Zamora is being held in the Center Police Department Jail; bond has not been set. He has not been charged with a crime in the woman's death.
