EXCLUSIVE: Mother of man in Wood Co. chase defends son's character

Posted: Updated:

WOOD COUNTY (KYTX) - Family members of the Wood County man who allegedly shot at officers and led them on a 13 hour search, talk to CBS 19.

Daniel McLemore was caught Tuesday afternoon. He was shot before being arrested and care flighted to ETMC in Tyler.

"Daniel is a very loving, caring person. He loves his family," his mother, Cindy Thrasher says.

Thrasher was too devastated to be seen on camera, but talked lovingly about her son to a CBS 19 crew.

"It was just a family disturbance. Him and his wife had gotten in an argument," she says.

That's why deputies showed up to his house Monday night. McLemore allegedly shot at them and took off running.

"I think he was just totally out of character," Thrasher says.

She believes it was several things that caused him to snap. One, was stress over losing his job two months ago.

"He was a safety guy in the oil field and he was under a contract and it apparently ran out and they didn't renew it," she says.

She also thinks something was going on inside him.

"He started doing steroids cause he was working out and I'm thinking those had a big impact on him," she says.

Thrasher says he has always been a great father to his two daughters, both under 12 years old.

"He was under a lot of stress and he had told me that he needed help.  He said he didn't know why he was angry, and I told him, 'You should get off the steroids Dan. I think that's what's doing it.'"

She says her son is not a bad, or violent person, calling the entire situation, a tragedy.

"I'm sorry to the officers that had to shoot their firearms, had to be in harm's way and I'm really thankful none of them got hurt," Thrasher says.

She and the rest of her family are praying for Daniel's recovery.

We also spoke to McLemore's wife who is extremely emotional and overwhelmed with the whole situation. She says she loves her husband, and tells us he had surgery Tuesday night.

The Wood County Sheriff says McLemore is expected to make a full recovery, and after two weeks of treatment, he will be transferred to the Wood County Jail.

He is facing attempted capital murder charges, with a $500,000 bond.
