Big Sandy company investing in employees health and fitness

Posted: Updated:

BIG SANDY, TX (KYTX) - The Strategic Fulfillment Group team from Big sandy actually lost the largest percentage of weight among the big companies who signed up to Lighten Up East Texas.  The challenge ended in April, but at Strategic Fulfillment Group, health and wellness is a year round investment in their employees .

Just about at anytime you drive through Big Sandy on Highway 80, you can spot people walking in their work, not workout clothes at Strategic Fulfillment Group.

"Our company has a wellness program that rewards that sort of thing," says Serena Kelley.
"We believe balance is the key to all things which is what helps us have happy employees. So part of balance is living well and wellness, so we have a wellness incentive program where they collect points for healthy choices," says Sally Allen, Strategic Fulfillment Group, Director of Business Development.

Serena Kelley participates in the wellness initiative at SFG.  Actually 30% of the employees do.
She's also one of 70 employees who took on the Lighten Up challenge.

"I had some weight to lose and I was tired of being sad and not doing anything about it. I had gained some winter weight -- about 30 pounds," says Serena.

So, Serena and her co-workers started working out more, eating less fat and sugar and holding each other accountable.

"I was trying to lose weight by myself because I had just had a baby," says Beth Washington. "I was doing it and then I would slack back off, so this gave me the motivation to keep going."

Beth Washington not only walks on her two 15 minute work breaks, she breaks out her Zumba and Wii Fit at home.  She dropped 28 pounds.

"I bought a dress and I wound up buying and extra large and my kids were like-- 'Mom, that's too big.' So, I had to wind up getting a medium and I was like yeah!"

Serena is also enjoying the benefits of her Fit City Success.  She shed 26 pounds and is down from a size 12 to 4.

"I feel lighter, more energy, more self esteem. That's worth a million dollars," says Serena"

A road to better health, paved by a company, who supports their employees.

If the employees get enough points for their healthy choices, they 're rewarded with gift cards.
Beth uses hers for healthy food and Serena has bought workout equipment and clothes with hers.
