Feeding ministry, community center to serve others

The children of Eagerly and W. B. Houston dedicated the community center they built in their name on Friday. The center will be used as a feeding ministry and event center, with hopes of after-school tutoring in the future.

"We were taught that service to others is the highest enterprise of the soul," said David Houston, one of the 10 children who funded the project. "Service is the rent we pay for living on Earth."

W. B. Houston, Sr. was a lifetime resident of Tyler. He was the founder and pastor of the Houston Temple Church of God in Christ in Tyler for 73 years as well as pastor for the First Church of God in Christ in Carthage for 63 years. He also pa stored at churches in Athens, Center, White house and Texarkana throughout his lifetime. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1994.

Mrs. Houston was very active in the community and served as district missionary for the Tyler and Terrell districts of the Church of God in Christ for many years.

The 6,000-square-foot center is located at 1313 N. Palace Ave. It will house the "Bread in a Starving Land, Feeding the Hungry" ministry of the Smith Temple Church of God in Christ.

The project cost about $800,000, which was provided by the family, David Houston said.

"We hope it will stimulate community development," he said.

Mary Alice Houston-Stabler, one of the five sisters in the family, called the event "historic for not only my family, but the community we were raised in."

"Never in my fondest dreams did I think this would ever happen," she said. "This is the result of our imagination and the blessings of the Lord."
