Bullard Solar Team to use solar car in international race competition

Posted: Updated:

BULLARD (KYTX) - The Bullard High School Solar Team is ready to hit the track for an international competition to put their new solar car to the test. Saturday they gave the public a first hand look at their creation.

It's an engineering creation made by students on the Bullard High Solar Team," said Cullen Hippler.

"It's super lightweight and super efficient for what we're trying to do," he said.

Building the car has taken a lot of time and money. Nearly $100,000 have been donated by the community and other sponsors to help the team build the car. The group started building the car in October 2012.

"We've literally built up to just a few hours ago to be sure that everything is ready and in tip top shape for the race."

The race: The Winston Solar Challenge International Race for High School Seniors.

Teams will gather in Dallas Fort Worth and in a weeks time, they'll travel about 1,000 miles making stops in different areas along the way until finally getting to Los Angeles, California.

"So we're very excited to be able to demonstrate it here," said Hippler.

This is the first time the Bullard team has entered the competition and are the only east Texas team in the race.

"Our hopes are to make a good presence as a first year team and give them something they're not expecting so we've designed our car to be as efficient as possible," Hippler said.
