The East Texas Food Bank makes headlines in New York Times

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - The East Texas Food Bank Garden is getting national recognition after another successful harvest.

Sunday's New York Times featured an article commending the Smith County Sheriff's Department for providing a way to help inmates do something positive with their time in jail. They grow fresh fruits and vegetables for needy families in exchange for leniency based on good behavior.

"To be able to learn something that maybe they've never felt before, and that's the feeling of maybe helping someone else, learning something they didn't know before. We all know what that feels like, but surprisingly some people who are incarcerated have never felt those things before," says the sheriff's department after four years of training.

It may be time to grow. They're looking for a bigger piece of land so they can help more people in need.
